Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ours is a Title I School, where more than 83% of our students come from underprivileged households. We serve a variety of ethnicities and minorities, primarily students from Hispanic (65%) and African American families (35%).

Our students are thirsty for knowledge and eager to learn; however, their families lack the resources to push their children beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

Many of our students are now exploring the choices available to them after high school graduation. Unfortunately, more than half of them will give up on their college dream for lack of support or financial resources.

My Project

Traveling to Washington, DC, will have a tremendous positive impact on my students' lives. They will participate in the Junior State of America's Winter Convention, through which they will be immersed in mock Congress and political debate. Furthermore, they will be exposed to the policy-making and diplomacy strategies used to govern our country.

Going to DC will allow my students, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse backgrounds, to sample the American Dream.

On this trip, we will visit the White House, Pentagon, FBI Headquarters, Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and the Engraving/Printing Museum while becoming politically active.
