Have you ever has trouble finding something that seems interesting to you? My students have! We have acquired many books that appeal to the younger boys, but there are very few that attract the attention of the younger girls.
We are located in an extremely rural school in Alaska.
We are physically separated from everywhere due to the lack of access to such a remote location. You can only access our village by plane in the winter or by dogsled - if you are brave enough. Being isolated from major shopping centers makes it more difficult to obtain almost any type of materials. There is a great increase in cost due to the transportation. This limits the amount of materials that we can get for our classroom. My students are primarily Alaskan Natives. They have been struggling readers, but there has been a shift in the students attitude toward reading. They have begun to enjoy it, and actually are reading at home. We need the materials, books to continue to drive the success that has been obtained so far.
My Project
We are requesting box sets of the Junie B. Jones series of books. These appeal to many of the younger girls in the middle school and they have a very limited selection of books to choose from. They will be shared will all students, but we are trying to motivate some of the struggling young ladies to get excited about a book series. These will be used for independent reading and book talks between students. They also will be used as part of our Accelerated Reader (AR) program.
These books will help to ensure that the students stay motivated about reading.
I hope that we can get students excited about reading by enjoying a series such as this. If we can improve their reading, all other areas will be improved also.
