Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus located in Pasadena, which is an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, and have had their homes and lives altered in unforeseeable ways.
Where there should have been the excitement for starting Kindergarten, instead other feelings overtook these families and kiddos.
My students were in school for four days before they were out for two weeks. Some lost everything and are still not in their home at this time. The school was able to give them back some sense of normalcy and safety. Their resiliency and desire to still learn is astonishing.
Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.
My Project
Every day in my Kindergarten class, we read a book. Sometimes we may read even more than one book! We explore fiction, non-fiction, procedural, informational, and realistic genres just to name a few.
Read aloud and independent reading provides a great adventure for my students.
My students cannot yet read chapter books, but can listen to them. We have started reading Junie B. Jones, and they love it! Unfortunately, I only have a few books in the series. They are such an easy read that we are quickly going through them. Having these two box sets would give us the full Junie B. collection - what joy this would bring! They would tie in nicely with our realistic fiction unit coming us soon, which many could make connections with.
A Bissell sweeper would allow us to help maintain our classroom carpet and rug, and quickly pick up any crumbs or messes we may have left throughout the day. A crumbless rug would give them a more sanitary area to lay down and relax as I share with them the grand and wild adventures of Junie B.
