I need to attend the International Baccalaureate Computer Science training workshop to bring IB Computer Science to my school.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are juniors and seniors at a public high school in the District of Columbia. They are all students of color, many of whom receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The young people in my physics classes are passionate and curious science students.
They're eager to learn about the world around them and excited to solve difficult problems. My students love hands-on learning through experimentation and model building as well as using computers to engage in our self-paced learning modules.
My school is the only comprehensive public high school in DC that offers the International Baccalaureate program. However, our IB offerings are very limited, so only a small percentage of our student population has the opportunity to take these challenging courses. We only offer one IB science class, and, moreover, we offer no computer science or engineering electives at our school. I would love to start IB Computer Science at my school next year so that we can entice more students into our IB program as well as equip our students with technical skills that will provide them opportunities regardless of what they pursue after high school. Having taught computer science this past summer, I am keenly aware of the empowering nature of learning to code, and I would love to engage and empower our students code!
