James O. Kaler Elementary School is a small, tight knit community school in South Portland, Maine. Our school community is comprised of grades PK-5, serving 230 students. The small class sizes have allowed each and every staff member to forge strong relationships and trust with our students. It truly takes a village and our passionate staff and faculty do everything they can, every day, to make a difference in the lives of these young students.
For many students, country-wide, school is the safest and most predictable place in which they spend time.
We are lucky to have an amazing resource room providing services to students with developmental differences and other exceptionalities. In addition, we have a school counselor, occupational therapist, school psychologist and social worker to serve this high needs population. It is the responsibility of all educators to make it possible for them to learn and grow in an inclusive, positive environment. For this reason and more, we work hard to ensure students receive thoughtful intervention, Positive Behavior Instructional Support (PBIS), social-emotional learning and embrace a growth mindset approach to education.
We are highly motivated to bring a new tool to our arsenal at Kaler School -- a trampoline! Trampolines are used for rebound therapy and have been proven to be highly effective in helping students with ADHD/ADD, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, trauma, Sensory Processing Disorder and more. Trampolines are used as tools allowing practitioners to execute low impact, play-based therapy.
Through this therapy, students are able to improve nervous system self-regulation, impulse control, motor skills, muscle tone and balance.
A trampoline would provide and new and effective method through which students at all grade levels can continue to grow. It is extremely important to us that this tool is as safe as it is effective, so we have chosen a trampoline which is spring-free and has netting around it. We are also excited to make use of a weighted lap blanket to help students find a comfortable seat. Student seating that works best for them is crucial to their productivity and learning. Thank you for considering a donation towards something that will make a tangible difference in our students lives.
