Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I can and I will succeed! Failure is not an option. Mr. W's fifth grade math students have taken this attitude as they jump over the hurdles of adversity, poverty, and limited resources. Persevering through difficulties is customary for the students.
With a student population of 536, the student body is 88% Hispanic, 11% African American, and 1% White.
For many of the students, Spanish is dominant language spoken at home. The math scores of Mr. W's students have increased from 64% to 88% within the last year. Additionally, the student body is highly transient; this is because a homeless shelter sits within two blocks of the campus. With diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, many of the students have varying deficiencies, some of which are never addressed. Thus, setting the students up for failure.
My Project
Mr. W's would like to integrate lessons via technology to get the students on grade level. With the centers, he can work with student(s) on a 1:1 ratio using individualized lesson plans to work on specific deficiencies. Homework and worksheets can then be generated based on each individuals needs. Each student would also be able to monitor and track progress. I have requested the Math Problem Solving Kits, Math Quiz Show Games, and Daily Math Journals to expose my students to math concepts in real world applications. Using these tools will allow students to realize that Math counts daily. Mastering math concepts in sports, food service, and game shows allows the student to see that regardless of the setting the math concepts are consistent thus clearing another hurdle while increasing the students' self-esteem.
Mr. W's seeks to engage the struggling students by exposing the students to interactive and modern methods of teaching.
For example, I have used centers to teach students how to: plan destinations, weddings on varied budgets, and determine the percentage of savings from different stores sales ads.
