My Students

I work with students who are learning algebra and geometry. Whenever possible, I like to relate the mathematical concepts they are studying to real world objects they see around them. Helping them discover how mathematics isn't only an abstract concept, it lives in the world around them. Seeing the dawn of understanding on their faces when presented with new material is incredibly rewarding!

My Project

My students often ask me "Why am I learning this and what is this good for?" when we are working through algebra and geometry problems. The materials I have chosen will augment the classroom experience by showing them both the beauty of math and how we can use technology and algorithmic thinking to solve problems with coding in python. We will use the math books for inspiration to see the beauty in mathematical objects, we will use the new filament in our classroom 3D printer to print geometrical objects that are governed by equations that we discover, and we will use a Raspberry Pi and Python code to solve equations by developing algorithms and then testing them Python.

This will expose my math students to technology that will let them apply mathematical thinking and show them how math applies to their lives in a concrete way.

These items will hopefully excite them about possible futures working with technology and make the connection that math governs everything they outside the classroom. From fractal shapes of snowflakes, the predictable movement of a ball thrown in the air, or even symmetry in their faces, all are grounded in math.

My goal is that my students see that learning mathematics is not only a classroom subject, but is all around them in the world.
