Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the beginning of every year many of my students tell me that they are not good at math and never will be. I wonder how 10-year-olds have come to this conclusion so early in their educational career and I make it my mission to change their perception of themselves as mathematicians.
My class is a diverse group of twenty-six 5th graders who love to learn!
My students attend school in an inner-city school in New Mexico where 65% receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students struggle with math, reading, and writing and only 40% of my current students scored proficient in math on our state's standardized test last year.
My Project
The diversity of my class is not only cultural and linguistic. My students' understanding of different math concepts also differs from lesson to lesson. Trying to create whole group lessons that address every child's needs is a difficult task. The implementation of the Common Core State Standards has made this task even more trying as our school doesn't have updated curriculum materials that reflect these new standards.
The lack of educational funding in the state of New Mexico makes obtaining most supplies for my classroom almost impossible. My students are very excited to learn and the Jump Math curriculum will help me provide rigorous math instruction while allowing me to meet individual student's needs, getting them ready for middle school and beyond!
I believe that all of my students can learn but I cannot do the work for them... they have to believe in themselves.
Having a curriculum that specifically targets my students' needs and provides materials for students to practice new concepts will allow my students to gain confidence and change their self-efficacy in mathematics.
