Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.
Our classroom cheer sums it up: "You too, we too, we all love preschool!" We are a group of actively involved adults-teacher, aides, and therapists, and children working together in our hands-on learning environment.
My Project
The physical and mental health benefits of exercise are well documented and just what we need as most of us are stuck at home and going just a little bit bonkers. My students are also at home, all in multi-generational living circumstances where resources are limited, and, I'm hearing from stressed parents, that they are also missing school.
During a "normal" school day we engage with the children in a variety of gross motor activities, however given the current crisis, they can't even walk to school.
The kids are given tablets and screens to engage with with scant opportunities for much needed gross motor activities given the close quarters.
Pogo jumpers to the rescue! One-- the kids love! them because we have them in our class. Two-- the pogo sticks (actually a tough band) collapse into a small box, so take up little space. Three-- they are versatile for in and outdoor use.
I want to get these pogo jumpers and distribute them to my students so that they can safely have a heart thumping good time while stuck at home.
