Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Creating a fun and dynamic learning environment takes time and the right materials. That is what this project is all about!
My students are third graders attending a large urban public school.
Most live in poverty, but they enjoy coming to school and learning new things. Unfortunately, our school budget shrinks more and more each year. This means we have very little provided for us beyond textbooks, desks, and chairs.
My Project
My students need 60 pencils, 4 packs of magnets, a kidney table for small group instruction, and an iPad mini to use for literacy and math stations. The kidney table I'm requesting will allow me to conference with student individually or in small groups. That way I can meet with students to address stumbling blocks they may have had in math or reading or even use it as a station when we're doing science experiments. The pencils will be used in our community jar so students can quickly trade a pencil in need of sharpening with one ready to go. This leaves more time for learning! The magnets will be used to hang posters, charts, and other important visuals.
The iPad will spark curiosity, be used to launch lessons, and be used individually or in pairs. Students can explore the world through various apps and websites. They can learn important math concepts, whether they are working on advanced work or reviewing grade level math skills that were challenging in our whole group lesson. Students can also tumble head first into the world of reading through children's magazines and virtual books.
Engaging children and cultivating a dynamic classroom is much easier with the right materials.
These materials will not only save us time and make our classroom run more smoothly, they will also capture students' imaginations and spark their curiosity. Imagine the worlds a child can explore with an iPad; they will be able to see people, animals, and plants on different continents, explore math strategies at their own level to produce those ah-ha moments, and just dive into a wonderful book.
