This proposal is to jump start our book-in-the-bag reading program earlier in the school year. It is to obtain sets of emergent readers that children can take home to help with their sight words, book and print awareness, comprehension and fluency. Many of my students do not have access to books within the home. This would allow me to help bridge the gap of learning between the home and school creating a print rich environment. Here's how it works, each student takes a book home each night. The students read to the parent or guardian and signs a reading log. When the student returns a book, another one is sent home. The children's attitudes toward reading, and their interest and curiosity about the world is greatly influenced by those closest to them, the parent or guardian. Also, this encourages parental involvement making parents join partners in the total education of the child.
