I work with a community of resilient and curious young people in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. This year will be my first year working with little ones, second graders! I am beyond excited to begin work with them. Help us start the year off ready to learn! As it is my first year in a new grade and given the financial constraints our community we are in need of basic supplies.
Our community of learners is very diverse, we have Arabic, Spanish and Mandarin speakers in our room.
The majority of my students reside in the nearby transitional shelters. Many of my students face the challenges of poverty and homelessness. While they face these challenges they are no different than any other seven year old, hungry to learn and discover. They are constantly asking questions about the world, and I am always in awe of their independent agency in finding these answers. My students are wide-eyed during read alouds, happily messy during garden class, and caring of each other and those they love.
In my classroom, I hold high expectations for students. Encouraging them to succeed not despite their experience, but because of it.
My Project
I am requesting the basic classroom supplies needed so my students can have a warm, and welcoming place on the very first day of school. As many of my students spend their evenings in transitional housing, where many do not have their own space, it is even more important that our classroom is a place they feel safe and that they can call their own. A place where they can they do not have to feel supplies are limited or poor quality.
The supplies you provide will also help ensure our learners are getting an equitable learning experience.
We understand that equity is getting what you need to achieve. My students' economic background, and their families inability to supply classroom materials should not be a hinderance to their learning.
Some of these supplies include writing notebooks. Along with that pencils, crayons and markers for students to build their love of writing.
