Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a new teacher at the school where I work, but not new to teaching. I have been very fortunate in my first year to have had a great group of 29 second graders. I am sure every teacher would agree that although teachers as well as students look forward to recess, for teachers there is also a dread to recess. The reason for the dreading of recess is what teachers need to deal with after recess. There are usually fights, arguments, accidents, etc. that teachers need to settle after recess. Resolving these issues takes up instructional time. Most of the time the reason there are accidents, fights, and arguments is that the children horseplay or play tag during recess. The contact leads to injuries or conflicts between students. I believe if students had organized play, there would not be so many of these problems. I think children throwing balls around and jumping rope is more constructive, improves students' coordination and doesn't lead to as much conflict. If anything, playing with balls and jumping rope help improve social skills and cooperation. It is for this reason I think a class set of balls and ropes would be helpful to both teachers and students during recess.
