My Students

I am an exceptional children's teacher at elementary school in Charlotte, N.C. I teach kindergarten through second grade students. My students have a range of learning differences that require movement, action, and sensory input added to their academic day. As my students enter the classroom, I provide a motor and sensory break for the first few minutes of class. This helps the students to fulfill their sensory input needs for better self-regulation and concentration. The students are provided with kinetic sand, building pieces, playdough, soft sided sensory textures, and a variety of exercises. For example, after sitting most of the morning one of my students enjoys coming to my room for a sensory break. He loves the feel of kinetic sand and it provides him the sensory input he needs to be successful. Another one of my students requires physical exercise, this helps her receive the input she needs to complete academic tasks. I love teaching my exceptional children and want to provide the best academic environment for them every day. To do this I need your help.

My Project

Sensory objects, sensory hallways, and alternative seating allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. While in the general education classroom, many of my exceptional students get overstimulated and require a way to release this energy. When they come to my class, I would like to provide this to them with sensory objects, sensory hallways, and alternative seating. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are allowed to use sensory objects such as kinetic sand, K'NEX, or physical activity prior to sitting down to learn. My students are more engaged in their work and less disruptive when they are given the opportunity to release the buildup of energy and intake sensory input.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional supplies to make more effective learning choices.

The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desk/higher tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The sensory tools and pathway will also help students that need to move prior to sitting down to learn. This will also help my students to be more engaged in learning.

I have seen how sensory items can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
