I teach high school. My students are primarily seniors, preparing for college and in either a film or creative writing class. They are a diverse group both in cultural background and in the artistic interests they bring to the classroom. We watch films, write, make films and put together an award winning literary and arts magazine.
Because we are a film class, I want to offer the students the best possible way in which to view the cinematic works we study. As well, students make their own films, and I want to see them--big, with a good image that conveys their meaning. We also lay out the literary arts magazine. It would be wonderful if we could do this in a classroom with everyone's immediate input--to really have the class participate and own this work.
To fulfill these dreams for my students, I'd like to start with an LCD projector. I want to enhance their classroom experience, empower my students so that they can see the possibilities of what can be accomplished with their work. In film this year, each of my classes will be making small films, as well as one "class" film. How exciting for them to see their work in such an immediate environment.
Similarly, when we produce the magazine, how wonderful if all the students can participate in the editing and lay-out of the magazine, as well as use this for their work on the individual books they create for the class. I want my students to have the best possible experience with learning--from film to writing. I know this is possible with good, 21st Century equipment. The students also need to prepare for college where they will be expected to engage with technology such as this LCD projector in reports and presentations.
Your help will make possible this active, creative learning experience for my students. There is no other way for them to really appreciate film except by seeing and participating in the making of them. There is no more powerful experience for my writing students than to see their work and experiment with the process. This LCD projector is the beginning. It will, indeed, change the process of their education. Of course, when they learn about film, they are learning about ways of seeing, the impact of media on their lives. They are learning how it works on them and how to take control of that process. When they learn to make books or magazines, they are learning the power of language and image. Your donation will make all this happen for them. It will change the way these courses are taught, and thus change lives. Thank you in advance.
