My athletes are very excited to learn how to play basketball and volleyball! Our school is one of the most diverse schools in the area. We have a high number of English Language Learners at our school. We are lucky that our district offers athletics for 4th and 5th graders. My athletes have so much pride being on the team. We do not all have the same access to the equipment needed to play. I do however ensure that Everyone gets an equal amount of playing time on the court.
The athletes not only learn how to play sports but how to work as a team and lift each other up with our words of encouragement.
Being on the team motivates the students to do well academically as well. Their behaviors and grades improve in the classroom.
My Project
My students need scrimmage pinnies to distinguish what players are on their team so they do not pass to the wrong player. They need cones and jump ropes for endurance drills. Many athletes get tired very quickly during the games. Building their endurance will help them compete.
Many of my students do not bring water and need water bottles.
Refillable water bottles will allow them to have water during practice and games. Running around playing basketball requires a lot of endurance and these items will help us build our endurance. My athletes all love to compete and want to be the best they can be!
