This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every single one of my students is going to be a leader. In fact, they already are leaders. We are leaders in the hallway, the classroom and at home. The Leader in Me is a process that builds character and fundamental life skills for children, teachers and families.

My students live in a community where parents work (often more than one job) and do not have time or resources to necessarily provide the examples of leaders that children need to see.

Our school provides wonderful programs for children such as free breakfast and lunch, however, we are still working on the atmosphere of the school. As of now, the walls are blank and cold, and the spirit is minimal. My students don't know they are leaders yet.. I will continue to believe in them until they believe in themselves.

My Project

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, based on the 7 Habits by Dr. Stephen Covey has been proven to revitalize schools even in the worst of situations. They include: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First things First, Think Win-Win, Seek first to Understand, Synergize and Sharpen the Saw. I know this process can help my students. To get started, we each need to be able to have access to the book- not just photocopies, but something students can take pride in holding and relating to. The Leader In Me schools are proven to have less discipline referrals, better test scores, and children who achieve amazing things.

With just 18 of these books, each of my students can keep a copy in their desk for constant reference.

This process is just beginning at my school and it is so important to me. The only way we can make it work is through a ubiquitous approach. I need my students to understand the habits before I expect them to live the habits. Having their own book for the year, will help them do this.
