This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I've worked at my school on staff with the marching band for five years and became the band director this past school year. I can genuinely say that I work with some of the kindest, most passionate kids I've ever come across. They deeply care about music and their band community.
Richfield, the state of Minnesota's oldest suburb just south of Minneapolis, calls itself the "urban hometown".
We have the community of a small town but the diversity and opportunities of a metropolitan city. Our student body is truly diverse, and we're stronger because of it.
My Project
Our 2019 competitive summer marching band show is titled "Soar Above" and is a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Last year, we used drum slip covers for the first time, and they made our 15+ year old drums look brand new and added more visual depth to our show design. This year, our show includes many WWII elements along with a cloud motif and cloud props to symbolize the obstacles the Tuskegee Airmen overcame. These drum slips from On2Percssion for our snares and quints would help add to our visual general effect score and increase the pride and buy in from our students.
