In just a few short days, I will begin my first year as Library Media Specialist at a K-5 elementary school. The school is located in a suburban community and is quite diverse. Our student body has a large Indian population. I am fortunate to see each student that comes through the doors. That’s a lot of lives to impact!
Today’s students are tomorrow’s teachers.
I want to provide them with the tools they need to succeed in their educational, professional and personal lives. I believe I can accomplish my goals, but it all begins with basic needs (and wants) that I hope you can help me provide.
My Project
In order for my vision to come to life, I need the supplies and materials to make it possible. With a healthy book budget, I have the academic portion covered, but the aesthetics in the room are lacking. For instance, the poster that describes the rules of the library is yellowed and old. I want students to know the rules are important. They exist out of mutual respect for their friends and me, and that drab old poster doesn’t impart my message. I have a bulletin board outside my room that I have so many ideas for! I just need the materials to make my visions come to life. I don’t have bookmarks to give to students who choose a chapter book or stickers to say good job!
Before I address students higher order needs, I want to address their basic needs and create an environment that is positive and encouraging.
If students are in a place that they feel comfortable, they are so much more open to learning.
