My students need help with transitioning from living at home to living on a university campus in a dorm room with things like refrigerators, microwaves, and of course, dorm fans.

Our students are from Detroit, Michigan, and came specifically to JRLA for the emphasis our high school places on college.
Our school can be difficult and has high standards, but the students who attend persist because they know it will be worth it in the long run when they get into college.
Our students are motivated to graduate from college and use their education to help change their communities. They are excited to change their family's future and being agents of change for the city of Detroit
Going to college can be one of the most exciting times in a student's life, but it can be quickly tarnished by the overwhelming costs they are forced to pay. In fact, students cite financial problems as the biggest reason for dropping out of school.
The majority of our students are enrolled in the National Lunch Program, so purchasing a laptop, fridge, or other supplies can become next to impossible without some help.
We are excited to reward them for the hard work they put in during the past four years!
For the class of 2016, we had 50 of our 80 students enroll in 4-year universities. The majority of our students have a 0 estimated family contribution (EFC), and we have found that the biggest reason students drop out is because of financial burdens. We were hoping to help, even if it's just a tiny bit, by raffling off the items for the students with the greatest need as well as living on campus next year.
To be eligible for the raffle, students will have to submit their enrollment confirmations to the 4-year universities they plan on attending next year. They will have to tag our "JRLACollege" Instagram and post what their dream dorm room will look like. Students who meet the requirements will be automatically entered into the raffle and have a chance to win something for their dream dorm room!
