I have a very active and energetic group of students! They are a diverse bunch that come from far away places like Iraq, Albania, Mexico and Puerto Rico. They join boys and girls whose parents and grandparents were born and raised in our community. Despite their many different backgrounds and ability levels, they come to school each day with a positive attitude, ready to make friends and eager to learn. They are happy to come to school and make the best of each day.
My Project
We are mighty mathematicians in training! In first grade we count, we count on, we count back, we count to 10, then 20, then 100 and on to 120! We add and subtract. We solve story problems. We count by 10. We constantly ask, "How many?" and we look for efficient and accurate ways to count!
Math apprentices need good tools!
To build a strong number sense, we need many tools. Unifix cubes help us count on and back. They can be used to practice counting by 10s. The trays will support our investigations into numbers up to 100. They will assist us as we explore the number system and look for patterns. Number paths will guide us as we learn how to use a number line to count accurately. Mini clocks model the telling of time to the hour and the half hour.
Books can help us see where our math learning is taking us. As apprentices, we need to set goals and connect our learning to our lives. Stories about math can support those connections.
