Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of my students are identified with various disabilities such as medical, cognitive, and behavioral. This is a Title I school where the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our students have individual education plans and are located in self-contained classrooms. The demographics consists of low middle-class group that is 70% white and 45% Hispanic.

We are teaching them health and nutrition, social skills and job readiness.

My students are learning about functional academics, daily living, employment, and curriculum. Our students have language disabilities and fine motor issues. They require intensive reading and writing instructions.

We are teaching concepts that should help them live independently. We cook weekly and the math concept is taught through functional academics.

My Project

We currently have a 1.6 cubic foot cooler as a mini fridge. We have to store our products in other classrooms or at the cafeteria. I cook on Fridays and the students participate in cutting, mixing, measuring, and creating meals by following recipes. We have teas once a month where we have guest speakers and the students dress up. We make cheese trays, veggie trays, and fruit bowls.

I am requesting a refrigerator for our classroom to replace the table top model we currently have.

Our students have received other items through Donor's Choose to participate in culinary activities.
