Many students at our high school come from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background. A significant number of them will be the first (and in some cases, only) member of their family to pursue an education at the post-secondary level.
I see my students as more than just names and faces; they are my kids.
It is my greatest desire to show them the myriad of possibilities a meaningful education can afford them. Throughout the course of the school year, I strive to help each student who walks through my door realize how the concepts they work to master in my classroom can empower them as individuals.
My Project
The printer, binders, tabs, and sentence strips in this project will allow my journalism students to create portfolios of their work that can be used as a visual representation of their progress throughout the year. The sentence strips will be used as a visual to track their ad selling progress. Additionally, they will use the Post-It Easel Boards for collaborative brainstorming.
Access to these supplies will allow students to produce a yearbook that our school and community will cherish for years to come.
Students will produce content and layout for the school's 95th anniversary yearbook. Throughout this process, they will learn how to write content, create visually interesting spreads for publication, master basic photography skills, and learn how to manage business transactions and marketing to produce a school publication. Additionally, they will use the Thank You cards included to help develop a positive relationship with the local businesses who purchase ad space in their book.
