Our school has an energetic student population. With a large student body, the students at this school span two campuses. The sixth graders in this building are the oldest students and act as leaders for the entire school.
They are well mannered model students, from various backgrounds.
The sixth graders help build our school community by leading lessons for the younger students. They are also voracious readers that enjoy book talks and love to have fun while learning! You can often find them reading in class and making connections to their own lives or other texts they have read.
My Project
In this unit students explore the experiences of people of in Southern Sudan during and after the Second Sudanese Civil War. Students will read the novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.
Students will practice citing evidence and drawing inferences from this compelling text as they begin to analyze and contrast the points of view of the two central characters, Salva and Nya.
They will also read informational text to gather evidence on the perspectives of the Dinka and Nuer tribes of Southern Sudan.
We will then participate in a deep exploration of character and point of view: students will combine their research about Sudan with specific quotes from A Long Walk to Water as they craft a two voice poem, comparing and contrasting the points of view of the two main characters.
If this project is funded, it will allow students to engage in rich text, compare and contrast the ancient Kush civilizations to more modern issues in Sudan and help encourage action through participation in "The Water Project Fundraiser," which helps give clean water to areas in Sudan that are in need. This unit will allow students to learn how to pay this kindness forward and have a direct impact!
