Our students come from a very rural area with little opportunities to experience new places and new things, in fact, many of the students in our district never travel outside of the county, let alone the state. Our school provides free lunches to all students within the district, and many participate in the backpack program which provides weekend meals and food for the family.
Without the support of the school, our students will most likely never be given an opportunity like this again.
The costs to attend such an event would be unattainable based on the socioeconomic status of the residents.
My Project
It is the goal of Oxford Middle School to take 40 students and 4 chaperones on a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. There we will participate in the Disney Youth Education Series where our students will carry out real-world STEM-based science activities. Thus building skills and knowledge that will follow them throughout their careers and life.
While in Florida we would like to send our students to the Kennedy Space Center to see first hand how the skills and knowledge they gain in school can change the world.
As our students come from a small rural school in Upstate New York many will not have had the opportunity to take a trip of this magnitude. It is the goal of our school to allow them to travel outside of our small community and participate in the STEM learning this trip offers; while also seeing cultures that are not often encountered in our rural community.
The learning that will take place on this trip includes content knowledge for STEM careers, along with the experiences of other cultures. These are invaluable skills and lessons that our students will benefit from for years to come. As we come from a small rural community funding a trip of this magnitude is difficult. We have been applying for grants, been awarded a couple, and have participated in fundraising. It is our hope that this portion of our trip can be funded through the generosity of individuals like you!
