Antarctica is a vast continent teeming with wildlife and exciting landforms. As this school year has progressed, I have noticed my students' growing interest in the continents. Many of them have recently focused their questions on Antarctica and wish to expand their learning.
These twenty first graders have worked so hard this year!
They have been consistently enthusiastic and eager to learn no matter the content. Recently we began "inquiry projects" in which they are responsible for guiding their learning about a particular subject. Their excitement and complete participation has lent itself entirely to this student-directed approach.
As we come to the end of our year together, I want to give them the chance to really dive into a subject one last time. A study of Antarctica will provide the opportunity for them to research what interests them most; be it whales, penguins, glaciers, or whatever else excites them.
My Project
This inquiry project on Antarctica will encompass all subject areas in the classroom. Overall, this can be viewed as a science focus. However, as they read, work together and share their learning with the class, students will be intensely engaged in reading, writing, mathematics and geography.
When students are given the chance to direct their own learning, it heightens their excitement for school and what they are doing on a day to day basis in the classroom.
If we can continue to inspire their learning in this way, we will hopefully build an optimism and exhilaration for school that will follow them the rest of their lives.
Please know any donations you provide will be greatly appreciated and helpful to these boys and girls! Thank you for your generosity!
