Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students in Queens, New York are all recent immigrants representing more than 40 countries. We are rich in diversity and life experiences. Some of our students come from rural backgrounds and others come from large cities. We come together not as an institution, but a community.
Students share the dream of obtaining an education that will lead not only to a better life for themselves, but for their respective families.
Our students are survivors who have already succeeded in adjusting to their new lives in the U.S. Their tenacity and optimism is admirable and contagious and motivates staff to work hard to help students to realize their educational goals. It is a school where students and staff feel welcomed, safe, and recognized as valued members of a community.
My Project
Every year we like to take our students ice skating so they have the chance to see a part of the city they rarely experience, get to learn a new skill, and build camaraderie. In the past we have noticed how this trip has positively impacted class unity, individual friendships, and teacher-student bond. Students are able to rely on each other and on their teachers to learn and practice a new skill. Students have reported in the past how this one trip is the most memorable of their high school trips. They are eager to take this trip each year.
