Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Authentic practice is the greatest way to ensure long-term student success. During a unit on real-world reading and writing, we will engage students in literacy activities through in-depth journal writing to allow them to grow skilled as writers, reflective and responsible as individuals.
This year, my class read Esme Raji Cordell's novel Sahara Special about a fifth grader repeating the grade after leaving special ed. The story takes place in a struggling, inner-city school in Chicago and delves into the thoughts and concerns, passions and fears of the students, teachers and parents involved in the protagonists' daily life. Sahara's new teacher encourages her troubled class to explore themselves through the written word, subsequently building a strong classroom of successful students. As we read the novel, my students kept their own journals in black-and-white marble notebooks. Through their writing and sharing, the students opened up, confronted their fears and began to grapple with some of the tragedies that so many of our students in the South Bronx face daily in school and at home-- foster care, homelessness, failure, death...
They became better, more involved writers while growing as individuals.
This year, we want the entire fifth grade to complete a similar writing unit using the same mentor text. But instead of marble notebooks, we want the students to possess the beautiful bindings that they deserve, that they can hold close as special. We would like a varied array of journals-- 90 in all-- so that each student can have her or his own.
