My classroom consists of a diverse population, from all over the world. Many of them are English Language Learners, come from low income families, and are growing up in inner city neighborhoods. At school they are provided with free breakfast and lunch and many of them are given backpacks of food every Friday to ensure they are fed over the weekend.
Despite the obstacles they face daily outside of school, they continue to show up eager to learn.
I consider my students to be the most caring, generous, understanding and helpful children that I know. They deserve the best education regardless of where they come from. When they enter my classroom, they feel safe and know they have the opportunity to find their strengths through engaging, hands-on learning.
My goal is to provide the necessary resources for an exciting and rich learning experience, especially for those who lack that opportunity in their home environment. If my students are fortunate enough to obtain these types of resources, this will help them develop the skills needed to be and feel successful. This will give them exposure to new types of learning.
My Project
Every year it is a goal of mine to instill the love of reading and writing in my students. Having these journals they will be able to keep their writing in a safe place and see their growth from the beginning of the year to the end. They are encouraged to always draw a picture to go with their reading and these journals give them the space to draw and write! In these journals they will be able to free write or they will be asked to reflect on what they learned or read.
Writing encourages children to be creative and explore their thoughts and to make connections with what they read.
These writing journals will allow me to assess their learning and see how they use my suggestions to make their next writing piece even better. The comprehension journals will help guide my instruction as I will be able to monitor their comprehension skills using these journals. The tote bags are for their journals to be kept in so they can take them back and forth from school and home as some of them do not have backpacks.
