My students need a class set of word journal writing books, a set of tracing tiles for our light table, and one organizational tabletop writing center.
I teach in a Title I school with a large population of Hispanic students. 100% of my students receive free lunches and come from low-income families. My students are eager to learn and explore their world. They come from diverse backgrounds but mostly come from low income families. Many of my students come to me with little to no English. They are experiencing learning in a public setting for the first time and sometimes come to class without the skills needed for academic success. Since many of my students do not speak English, they need to build up their communication skills and their vocabulary. My students also are building other skills needed for their success in my classroom and beyond.
My Project
My Pre-K students are just beginning to learn how to do to everything as they enter my classroom. More and more students are coming into my classroom without the necessary skills needed for success. One of these skills involves writing. My students are beginning to learn how to write their names, letters, and numbers. With the writing journals, my students will expand their writing to words around them. Each day we write in our journals words that are connected with the letter we are learning. These journals will help my students organize their words as well as learning to read those words.
My students then get to explore these writing skills during their independent learning stations.
With the tabletop writing center, I will be able to have writing materials organized and available for my students to explore and use the different kinds of writing mediums. Students can access all kinds of writing materials in one central location.
