Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach several art classes but I also run art clubs. I have created an art club during school hours as well as an after-school art club because my students are so driven and determined that one art club wasn't enough. My students love to some into the art room because they have a chance to become critical thinkers and independently create original art work that relates to them on a personal level. They are able to explore their emotions and release their frustrations by tapping into their inner thoughts and creating art work that inspires me and others to keep creating and evolving artistically. I am inspired by my students daily.
Art therapy is a creative method of expression used as a therapeutic technique. Students will be able to fill their sketchbooks with various journaling exercises that will help them understand their emotions, relieve stress, and create positive and uplifting artistic pieces. Students will learn how to become more intuitive and self-aware. They can use several media and techniques in their journals such as collage, write songs, paint, and write poetry.
In Their Own Words
I want to be able to paint and write what I want. I want to listen to music in art class and just be in the zone of drawing and painting whatever I feel that day. Sometimes I want to make sad paintings with sad colors. But sometimes I get really happy and I want to make happy pictures with bright colors.
I want to be able to show people I can draw and paint so that I can teach other people. I want to be in the art show here at school but I also want to have a sketchbook that is just for me that no one sees that has all of my private thoughts and feelings.
My parents don't get me art supplies and sometimes people think my doodles are not good. I just want to have time to go to art class or art club so I can draw my private thoughts and feelings without anyone judging me. It's important for me to have a break in my school day when I can just draw, paint, and relax.
