This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are the youngest and most excited scholars in our building. Their bright ideas are what I want to capture and promote this year. We will build our understanding of the world around us as we join as a community of learners. My students do come from diverse, and often economically, and emotionally unstable backgrounds, many of our students, in the past have been effected by family and community trauma. Our classroom will provide a safe space for their educational and emotional needs. Baltimore City has a bad reputation, but each one of my students can and will make it a better place!
My Project
The students will be given small group opportunities to learn about journaling feelings, new learning, and ideas that will broaden their skills and understandings of their school and community. Each student will be given time each day to journal. Because of their age and developmental stage, they will practice expressing themselves through pictures, transcription, and early writing. This process will help boost their writing, reading, and language acquisition. They will be given opportunities to share their work with peers, parents, and community members. It will give them a voice to express themselves and to help build empathy and skills in engaged, meaningful conversation.
