Journaling Into the New Year

Help me give my students primary writing journals, colored pencils, crayons and markers.

My Students

I teach at a small neighborhood school on Chicago's west side. Nearly half of our students are English language learners and seventy-seven percent of our students are low-income.

This year I have 25 wonderful third graders who are excited to be back in school and are ready to learn!

Making the transition from second to third grade is always an adjustment and this year is no exception. We are now in our third year of the pandemic and some of my students have spent the last year learning online and some have participated in hybrid learning.

My Project

My students love art! They also need work on improving their penmanship. Because so much of last year was spent on the computer, students have had less opportunities to practice their penmanship. I would like to give students an opportunity to practice writing while also letting their love of drawing to keep them engaged.

In addition to the academic benefits, journaling has been shown to improve students overall mental health, build their self-confidence, encourage critical thinking and inspire creativity.

Writing journals area also a great way for students to see how much they have grown in their writing. My hope is that as my students become better writers they will be stronger readers.
