Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The dual-language immersion model is based in a low-income community. This program offers students a rigorous academic program where they receive 50% English and 50% Spanish instruction and are expected to become bi-literate - to read, write and speak with the same high level of proficiency in both Spanish and English.

This model is based on equal respect for different languages as well as for the cultures of which those languages are a part.

Many students rely on the resources of the school to provide them comfort during the day.

My Project

Journaling helps my students to be less restrained when expressing themselves. I have found this to be the case in both math and science. My students have been able to express themselves and show their work when given the time and strategies to journal at their own level and pace. Having a color coded journal has also allowed many of my students which have executive functioning to organize themselves.

Journaling gives my students time to organize their thoughts and prepare responses, which gives them the extra confidence they need to participate in classroom discussions.

Journaling is also a way for me as a teachers to learn more about my students.
