Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible people! I love their passion for reading, learning, and their community. I discovered their passion for social justice issues when we learned about spirituals and the civil rights movement. So many of them wanted to learn how to use their voices to fight for the causes they believe in most. Since 96% of my students are on free and reduced lunch, many of them are passionate about fair wages, immigration reform, and treating everyone with equality. Several of my music students wrote songs about their fears of deportation and their desire to stand up for the rights of DACA children.
My Project
I am asking for 8 brass and woodwind instruments and 10 ukuleles for my classroom. Getting band instruments and ukuleles will help both my modern band in the classroom and my traditional wind ensemble after school. Many of my students show an interest in joining band, but they are unable to afford their own instruments. By getting this donation for our school, we will be able to get 30 students in band instead of the 7 we had last year. We will have a ukulele for all my students during their music class in school. Year after year, students will continue to benefit from these instruments being added to our inventory. The students at Maxwell elementary are incredible learners, and playing in the band helps them work toward our school values of collaboration, independence, and joy!
