My students come to me from all of the surrounding areas of Middleton, Nampa, and Caldwell. Some are from the local towns and others come from the outlying rural areas. My students are typical 2nd graders who love hands on activities, discovering new concepts and finding out how things work. My school has 2 classrooms per grade level and we have a large number (~40%) of our students have free and reduced lunch. My kids are inquisitive and thoughtful; always finding new ways to make me smile.
My Project
Every October our school (grades K-12) chooses a classic novel for a book study. On October 31st, we have a school-wide Harvest Party celebrating this book. The students and teachers are invited to wear a costume to school that day that represents their chosen character from this book. Next year we have decided that each grade level will focus on the same novel each year. Second grade has chosen the novel The Wind In The Willows.
With individual books, the students can read along all together and join in on the adventures with Toad and his friends.
This classroom set of books will be used for our yearly school-wide book study. My students will read along with me, to learn about this classic novel, The Wind In The Willows. In the past I have read these novels to my students, but with a book in every child's hands, they will take more ownership in their own learning.
