Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students from Austin attend a STEM academy focused on project-based learning and college readiness. This school gives students of all ethnicities, status, and parts of Austin the opportunity to learn strategies and innovation for life-long learning.
They love our daily independent reading times and are constantly looking for books that relate to their lives.
It is a joy for students with diverse backgrounds to read stories that give them language to describe their lives. These books give them power to embrace their identities as readers and writers!
My Project
These graphic novels appeal to students who have a hard time reading thick texts, by covering events with a humorous commentary, and they depict historical issues that students often don't find interesting. Novels like Persepolis and the March series make politics real for students, and give them a fun way to learn about events that have shaped the world around them. Also, the book Wonder lends itself to conversations around differences between us, and how our differences can actually be our strengths. This book helps us to build community as a class as well, showing students that being kind is always better than being right.
