Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine the obstacles for economically-disadvantaged children who are expected to produce assignments at home, but who lack computers, Internet connections, and printers!
40% of the students at our middle school are designated as economically-disadvantaged.
Our district is one of the poorest, in a county with much (unshared) wealth in neighboring districts. 35% of our students are Spanish-speaking English learners who struggle throughout their school day.
My Project
My computer lab classroom is open before school and during lunch, while also supporting my student load of nearly 300 students. Students are always welcome to come here for the technology support they don't have at home. As a technology teacher, I am PASSIONATE about leveling the playing field!!
Students in my eight sixth-grade classes can proudly produce portfolios of their classwork, as they work their way through over 100 word processing projects, while they build power-user skill sets. My 7th-8th grade creative writing class can mass-produce their work as they produce collaborative class "magazines" filled with stories and graphics.
My background in printing and graphic arts enhances the learning experience in this technology area, giving my hundreds of students an advantage in creating their printed documents for school - now and in the future.
Additionally, any student is welcome to use a computer in my classroom to print assignments for other classes.
I operate a computer lab with currently $0 funding from the district for student-use computers and printers.
I went begging and got used computers donated by the county. Will you help me come up with a new printer? We're currently using a donated printer that is ten+ years old, and on its last legs.
