I teach 10th grade advanced students. I want to motivate them to read for pleasure- not just for academics. We have started a reading program at school and I want to expand the options for the students. I want to continue to motivate the students' reading by providing relevant, personal material.
Students do want to read, however, they are often challenged with finding a book to entice them. There are many distractions for student in our society. I want to encourage reading to be one of those distractions. My female students really like the writing of Jodi Picoult, so I want to provide books for them. Reading teaches more than just literacy, it provides an escape, teaches social norms, and provides a story that may relate to the student and how they are feeling.
I need a classroom set of Jodi Picoult books. I want to be able to discuss with the students what book is appropriate and why. I feel like this would make reading more interesting and relevant. For a successful society, we need to create students who are strong readers. The easiest way to do this is to provide them with relevant reading material.
Your help will ensure that my students increase their reading and literacy skills. This will lead to higher test scores and more college ready students. We have got to motivate students and hook them with reading material that is relevant.
