I teach a self-contained class of sixth through eighth graders at a high poverty public middle school in rural North Carolina. My special needs students are diagnosed with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and autism. Many of them also have physical, emotional, behavioral, and social issues. We are a high poverty school and are only able to obtain much needed supplies and classroom materials through generous donations.
My students are eager to learn and they don't let their disabilities define who they are or what they are capable of.
Instead, they rise to any challenge they are given.
My Project
I want to get my special needs students away from their screens for a while and let them test out the laws of physics. They need to learn how things work, problem solving skills, and how to work together on group projects.
The requested materials will be perfect for our very curious, beginning engineers who are tactile learners.
My students learn by doing, rather than by lecture. They can learn so many science concepts, but they can also learn valuable social skills by working together with the requested Tinker Toys, marble machines, therapy putty and building sticks. They will even be able to practice more advanced concepts that we study like engineering a pulley system with trial and error.
