Third graders represent the very best of the primary and intermediate grade levels! They are JUST old enough to assert their independence and demonstrate responsibility, while still appreciating the magic and innocence of childhood and the joy of being in school. That's what I love about this grade level!
Eight and nine-year-olds want to be challenged, yet love the simplicity of what's familiar.
They come to school each day ready to learn and leave each night looking forward to coming back. Our students come from hard-working families, with almost half of the population qualifying for free and/or reduced lunches. These third graders thirst for knowledge, and it's my passion to continue to feed them!
My Project
Each day when students finish their work, I get the same weary question...."what should I do now?" Typically, my answer is "read a book!" While this is a great motivator for some, others are turned off by this idea, and that's the last thing I want to do! There are several options for other activities, one in particular which hasn't traditionally had a place in the classroom setting.
Jigsaw puzzles provide students with an open-ended activity that will help them gain a variety of important life skills.
Puzzles help students learn how to work together to problem-solve. They allow learners to develop stamina and grit when faced with a challenge, all while practicing key communication skills. Students learn to improve their spatial thinking, and their small motor skills even get a bit of a workout! Most importantly, they learn to co-exist peacefully as part of a community, working together toward a collective outcome. What more could we ask of our students as lifelong learners than that?
While jigsaw puzzles may not be a required part of classroom life, they serve a very important role. They give students real-life practice and a way to engage their brainpower with something that is NOT technology - they see plenty of that as it is. Having puzzles as an ongoing option for the "early finishers" would give them a purpose and a focus for their free time. They are an excellent addition to any classroom. I would love to add some puzzles and puzzle storage to my classroom environment!
