Help me give my students hands on learning activities like the Phonics Spelling game and Prefix/Suffix Base Word Activities to add sparkle and magic to daily, monotonous, direct instruction language arts lessons.
My students are amazing Kindergarten through fifth graders that live in the great state of Wyoming. I have a wide range of abilities, ethnicities and SEL needs in my classroom. I have many students arrive at school each and every day "ready to learn" but I also have several that need additional support to achieve success.
My school receives title funds due to the fact that the majority of our student population receive free and/or reduced-price lunch.
In addition, our state has recently felt the effects of not only the oil and gas downturn, but also the reduction of coal production. Of course, we, as has the rest of our country, suffered the effects of COVID-19. We will continue to feel the effects of reduced funding for public education in our state.
My Project
I primarily instruct the struggling readers in our school (kindergarten through fifth grade). Often times, when kids aren't meeting grade level standards in reading, they receive intensive, direct reading instruction to help close the gap. While this instruction is meaningful, research based and proven to be quite effective, it is often times not the most fun or engaging for students. However! Putting a fun box of word building blocks or a basket of magnetic affixes out on the table as an incentive makes a world of difference in work ethic! Many of the activities I have chosen will support the instruction I deliver in a very effective, meaningful way!
