Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Already this year, my students are asking me when we are going to make origami. Every year I teach my students about the art of origami. We read the story "Sadako and the 1000 Paper Cranes" and then make our own 1000 paper cranes. I want to expand on this and teach my students about Sumi-e painting and Japanese anime. Studying all these topics in one unit in my art class will expose my students to traditional Japanese art as well as modern Japanese art.
Sumi-e painting is a style of Japanese painting that uses a calligraphy brush and ink to create controlled lines. These lines are important to the style of Sumi-e. In order to teach my students how to create this style of painting, I would need some supplies to teach with, which includes proper paper and inks.
Japanese anime is a very popular form of cartooning. Many students have an interest in it already and I want to expand their knowledge of the history and techniques in anime. The students will then create self-portraits as an anime character. Books that show technique and history will be important to teaching my students.
My students come from low income homes and get free lunch at school. My students will not have other opportunities to study Japanese art in such depth. With the help of this grant, my students will be given an invaluable opportunity. They will learn about origami, sumi-e painting and anime.
