Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Asian Culture awareness through Language Arts is a great step to help students learn about a different culture and its beliefs. I teach four 10th Grade Language Arts classes, each of them consist of thirty five students in a 90% Latino population. The classes are taught in an interdisciplinary classroom where students learn across the curriculum, Social Studies, English and the Arts. My school year is set up with four different units of study, which each emphasize a theme taught across multiple subjects. This year the Humanities team which includes two other teachers and my self developed a unit on Asian Studies.
This unit will help students become aware of the Asian Culture. Since our school is situated in an 80% poor area, its mostly Latino students don't have the means to learn about another culture besides their own. The school doesn't have the funds to buy additional books for this project. I feel that by exposing them to a different culture they will become more culturally aware, and this will help them interact outside of their classroom environment.
For this project to take effect I will be in need of the following materials: 35 copies of the book the "Tao Te Ching", 2 packages of Tag Board to create origami books and 6 packages of origami paper to cover the books. The "Tao Te Ching" will be used for students's primary reading, which has different poetic passages in which students will reflect upon. Once they read the passages, students will interpret what they have read by creating their own verses of wisdom and writing them on an Origami book that they will create. To culminate the project I would like to take them on a field trip to the Asian Museum downtown.
Your help will make it possible for my students to think outside of the box, to be more culturally aware and become more understanding of other cultures beside their own. By contributing to this project you will help students realize that even though everyone has different beliefs, one can learn and accept a culture by increasing appreciation of its heritage and diversity.
