As I start my 39th year teaching in the public school classroom, I am so thankful. My school, while built in the early 70s, is framed by two lovely state parks. On the way to work each day, I see sunrises over the mountain and a variety of wildlife.
My students are just as sweet and talented as the surroundings are beautiful and it is my desire to help develop and perfect that talent.
Our chorus classes sing a wide variety of music, and some of that music is perfect for live accompaniment. This year, I would love to have live percussion to enhance our performances.
My Project
My middle school students so enjoy music and love to "rock out!" Their energy is contagious and the music they produce is actually quite good! Last year, we had soloists and small groups accompanied with "live" keyboard, and this year, we would love to add a rhythm section to the mix. We need something small, portable and light for our performances and this Yamaha Drum Pad would be perfect! I found in my Intro to Piano and Guitar classes last year, that many students also played drums, but did not have access to a drum kit at school. It is impractical to bring drums from home, and this drum pad could always be set up in class and ready to be used in spontaneous jam sessions. What fun!
I am also hoping that the addition of a rhythm section will encourage more males to sing in chorus.
At the middle school level, guy singers are usually in short supply. I know the addition of a rhythm section would definitely make it "cooler" to be in chorus! (You know, "coolness" is very important at this age. )
