Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Let's face it... children hate reading! I can tell you, when it comes to reading my students are very particular. Finding books that interest them is the hardest thing to do as a teacher. I want my students to see that reading can be fun if you find the right book.
I teach 180 middle school students everyday.
While they all have their own personalities, the one thing they share is that they dislike reading. Over the years they have been conditioned to think that if a teacher assigns a book, it must be boring.
Despite their lack of interest in reading, I have some of the most amazing students. Despite living in a very poor urban community, they treat their school as a second home. It is my hope that I can give my students a reason to read.
My Project
About a year ago I got a project funded for a classroom set of the first Maximum Ride book. Ever since, I have had my students asking for the rest of the series. I bought a copy of each book out of my own pocket, but it is very hard for my students to share a single copy of the series. I hope that with a couple more copies of each book, my students will get a chance to share in the enjoyment of the entire series before they lose interest.
Finding a book that students enjoy reading is a rare occurrence, finding a series of books is nearly impossible.
