What if a book could change your entire view of the world? What if a book could change your entire life? Joyce's Portrait is that a book. With its imaginative allegories, beautiful imagery, and discussion inciting questions, Portrait is a wonderful novel that would greatly benefit our class.
I have the privilege of teaching the most genuine young men and women I have ever known.
We live in the dusty and dry city of Bakersfield in a largely agricultural section of our humble state. Given all of the challenges these students must overcome, I can honestly say they are some of the best people I have ever met and I am so proud of who they are all becoming. These students seem to come alive when poetry is read, but we simply don't have the resources at our school to expose them to life-changing poetry.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of James Joyce's novel Portrait of the Artist to teach to my various English classes.
My intent in teaching this book is to open students' eyes to the influence Joyce had on our modern world and modern literature. We will pay close attention to Joyce's stylistic innovations and how he shaped modern consciousness about psychology, how memory works, and how we interact with others.
It is a great novel for the grade-level that I teach because the novel revolves around many of the themes that young men and women deal with, including: creating their own unique identity, confronting religious beliefs, joining a political and communal society, falling in love.
This is the perfect book for my kids and I believe their lives will be changed with this encounter!
