This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Eek! Help! Our 3rd grade class of twenty-seven students would really like to read the novel James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. In past years I have read this story aloud to students and each year the children fight over who gets to read along with the extra book I have. They love listening to the story, but they also like to read along with me. This vocabulary-rich story provides many opportunities to incorporate reading, writing, math, social studies and technology. It will also be used to support our Structures of Life unit in science. Some of the projects include writing a research paper on the different insects from the story, making clay boats to experiment with buoyancy, writing descriptive poems using new words they've learned from the story, reinacting a scene from the story, constructing a time line of different explorers who have crossed the Atlantic, comparing prices of different fruits, and having a "peach" party upon completion of the story. This is a great story that stimulates children's imagination. It's very costly for me to purchase a book for each child. Any contribution you can make would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!
