Our AWEsome Jaguar readers are curious, energetic, eager, and loved. Our students come from varied linguistic and cultural backgrounds spanning more than 50 languages! Our school community is made up of more than 40% economically impacted families who strive every day to support their kids. Our Jaguars are part of a school wide community that is supporting development of full biliteracy in English and Spanish. Some of our students face adverse challenges and learning can be affected. We strive to support each of our Jaguars every day with love and grace.
My Project
This first year pilot project will put amazing books into kids hands so they can read the summer away! We are inviting struggling readers, those a year or more below grade level, to pick 10 books to read this summer! Research shows that putting books in kids' hands can have an even greater impact than attending summer school! When kids choose from interesting and engaging texts, they enjoy reading and do more of it.
This project is looking to eliminate the 'summer slide', which creates a widening gap in achievement that becomes insurmountable for some students.
These books are high interest! They are colorful, new, and on topics kids love to read about like pets, robots, and volcanoes. These texts are easier for struggling readers to read since they are short, are supported by pictures and images, and engage and build on their background knowledge.
