Can you imagine your life without your iPhone, MacBook, or any other digital devices? Well, I can't either. Leaving a 1:1 digital learning school and transferring to a school with limited technology doesn't allow me to teach 21st century writing through the lens of reading effectively like I can!
1323 is the place to be.
Our vision at my school is for students and staff to aspire to be life-long learners with empowered minds. Our mission is for students and staff to collaborate, communicate, think critically, and be creative. We are a prek-5 school, PBIS school as well as Title 1. Positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) is a school-wide proactive system that provides strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate behaviors to create positive learning environments. Title 1 schools' goals are aimed at improving the academic achievement of the disadvantaged.
My Project
Three iPads will give me the opportunity to teach small groups 21st century digital writing and literacy skills. My students will use the iPads in many different ways. While in guided groups, we can read leveled mentor texts on iBooks to see examples of different types of writing. The students can use the Literably app to help me identify individual reading levels so that I can meet individual needs. Students can use the Lit leveler app to find lexile levels on books they are interested in reading. They can use the iPad to create Google docs, forms, and sheets. Google docs is a great way for students to write retellings or summaries about their books. Students can create forms such as a questionnaire or book recommendations using Google forms. Google sheets is a great way to record a reading log and it's easy to access. My students can even create Google drive folders for all subjects. They can share these folders with me and/or their peers to help with editing or to collaborate.
Digital writing & literacy is at the forefront of education.
We are in the 21st century and all students should have the opportunity to learn how to be digital citizens effectively. These iPads will give my students the experience they need to be successful in school and in life. Title 1 students are already at a disadvantage so why not give them the chance to have access to digital tools they will use the rest of their life. I'm ready to make them digital writing and reading life-long learners.
